    News from the Art Studio...

    updated 10/8, 2009

    Highlights in the Art Curriculum:
Grades K-6 participated in a school wide art study of the Buffalo and other bovine creatures. All classes approached this subject matter with both a two and three-dimensional study. Fourth graders spent an hour drawing “Beau” (Rising Thunder) and their drawings are on exhibit in the lobby and outside the library. Kinders and first graders created herds of bison in their habitat so watch out for bison when you travel down to the primary wing. Both the second and third grades were exploring the buffalo with 3-d paper constructions. Many of these have gone home to meet the family. 5th grade participated in a community service project creating plate designs for the Art Smart Project and are now making bovine recycled sculptures. The 6th grade and 5/6 classrooms began the year with a study of abstraction inspired by Pablo Picasso’s series of lithographs on the bull. Students etched into a milk carton and created abstracted bovines and then with great anticipation, printed them on the press.

    Field trips & Visiting Artists:
The two third grade classes will visit the International Folk Art Museum this fall to study the shadow puppets from Java. 4th graders study the Spanish Colonial Arts, which links to their New Mexico History Curriculum. If bus budgets allow we will visit the museum and host a visiting artist either in colcha or straw appliqué. Ms. Kelly’s class is in their second year of working with artist Joanne Lefrak from Site Santa Fe. She will guide the students through a study of art in March and it will culminate with a field trip to Site Santa Fe or nearby galleries. On October 21st both 5th grade classes will visit with Jeri Ah-be-hill as a culmination to our Buffalo Unit. Jeri is a Kiowa Indian and will lead a discussion on the many uses of the buffalo before the white explorers arrived.

    Wish List: (updated on 10/5/09)
fake flowers and plants, baby food jars with lids, tomato paste cans, unusual buttons, beads, old jewelry, uniform sized cardboard (25 pieces), Small colored lids for recycled collage

Gratitudes: A huge thank you to all our new and returning art volunteers. You bring so much to our school community and your work and time are a gift to us.

Artist Quote: “Seeing/Drawing is, beyond silence, the artist’s response to being alive. In so far as it has anything to transmit, it transmits a quality of awareness.”
    - Frederick Franck from The Zen of Seeing
