Headlines from The President of the PTC ...

From Karyn Schmitt - WG PTC President

UPCOMING EVENTS:

FUNDRAISING! President's Note: The PTC Board is aware that many families, if not all of us, are dealing with economic stress. Some may feel that the programs we are presenting are too numerous and possibly confusing . Parents ask us to fundraise in many different ways, and we are doing our utmost to raise what is needed financially

Please be aware that all fund raising activities are optional. Many of them have a component of coming together as a community as well as raising money. The WG PTC Board recognizes and appreciates all the efforts of our parents and staff to create the wonderful school that is Wood Gormley.

Clarification: Some fundraisers are not PTC sponsored( i.e. Holiday Raffle, Haitian collection)

PAPER DRIVE!! Wood Gormley is in need of paper for our teachers and students. Due to budget cuts, there is a serious shortage of this commodity. Please donate a few reams of 8.5 by 11 inch paper, any color or type. Donations from businesses are very welcome too! This will be an issue for us for the rest of the school year, so plan a monthly donation if you can!

COOKIE DOUGH FUNDRAISER-Monday January 25th is the kickoff day for the Cookie Dough Sale. This is our first attempt at this very simple fundraiser,so we look forward to the results.

WG DAY AT THE ZIA DINER-eat Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner at The Zia Diner on Monday, February 8th.! This is a Parent/Teacher conference day, so come over to the diner for lunch before or after your conference, or for dinner to celebrate!. Diners who mention WG will have a percentage of their meals donated to the WG PTC. Enjoy the wonderful food at the Zia Diner and share your meal with our wonderful community !

WG Store and Spirit Sales is in production of our new WG clothing ! In addition we will be selling recyclable, non-plastic water bottles and other new items. Watch out for an order form and our sale at the WG Dance in February ! Go Panthers!!

WG Annual Dance -Friday February 26th from 6-8 PM is the Wood Gormley Dance!. Our theme this year is a Masquerque Ball -come as your favorite character- historical, fictional, or cartoon. Nefertiti, Spongebob, Aristotle, James Bond, Road Runner, Hermione-who do you want to be? The WG student council and the PTC are collaborating on the best WG Dance yet. Details to follow.

Pennies For Patients-WG will be hosting a collection of change to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. One of our WG student and her family have recently gone through cancer treatment, and she is a survivor. The collection will begin in March on the 15th ( right after school break, so save a few pennies) and will last 3 weeks until April 5th. Nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars and checks are also very gratefully accepted! Research on cancer treatment has helped one of our own WG families- now we have an opportunity to give back.

The WG PTC Board will have openings in 2010-11, as two of our WG families graduate. If you are interested in being on the WG Board or be a committee chair, please contact any board member for more information . It is a rewarding experience, and our children benefit in so many ways .

There is lot going on at WG, and we encourage you to check the website frequently for updates and information. Studies confirm that involved families produce strong students and healthy, well balanced children. Wood Gormley is a high achieving school in part because of our active parents.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK:

Thanks so much for the copy paper donations! You are awesome! Continue donations if you wish. The donations are freeing up a few dollars for other classroom materials and supplies.

Volunteers Needed as Substitutes! Superintendent Gutierrez has decided that we can hire substitutes for our specials other than PE because it is not a state-funded PE program. Would any District-approved substitute be willing to volunteer to substitute for a day or more? If so, please let me know!

Volunteers Needed as Tutors! Are any District-approved volunteers interested in tutoring students after school? If so, please let me know!

Volunteers for After-School Activities: The School Advisory Council discussed seeking volunteers who would be willing to offer four- or six-week learning opportunity sessions two days per week for students after school. Examples of sessions or classes include Computer Usage, Learning Spanish and Scientific Studies. If you have a special skill or talent and are willing to volunteer your time for a special session or class for students, please let me know.

Caution! Please drive slowly in the school zone. Also, remember to stop at the stop signs. The crossing guards will not be directing traffic and will stop traffic only to allow students to cross the streets.

The Legislative Session began on Tuesday, January 19. Please encourage your legislators to protect public education funding. I anticipate additional reductions in budgets at SFPS for the 2010-11 school year, and this will definitely begin impacting services to students.

Be sure to have your children in school unless they are sick. Educational travel requires approval for absences to be excused, and educational excused absences cannot be taken during the testing windows per District policy. I have received approval from the District to excuse absences for educational travel IF WG students are not actually testing at that time. The District testing window for the month of February is as follows: February 1-February 26 - NMELPA testing window (ELL students only).

Please make sure that pick up arrangements are made prior to your child coming to school. If your child is not eating in the cafeteria, please send your child's lunch to school with your child. It is a disruption to teaching and learning when it is necessary to deliver lunches to classrooms or to let the teachers know of pick up arrangements.

School begins at 7:55 a.m. and is dismissed at 2:25 p.m. Please be sure your children arrive and are picked up on time.

We have great teachers, students and parents at WG!

February Dates to Remember:

Monday, February 8 - Parent/Teacher Conferences

Monday, February 15 - Presidents' Day - No School

Wednesday, February 17 - Sport Pictures Taken

Friday, February 26 - PTC-Sponsored Dance - Dr. Besett
